Colleen Atwood's long design history clarifies that she is an innovative designer using emerging technologies within her work. She repeatedly uses unique materials, colours, silhouettes and styles, often merging different historical and cultural contexts together.

Atwood's use of innovative design is clearly evident in Snow White and the Huntsman where she has altered the iconic costumes dramatically. Snow White's popular red yellow and blue dress is replaced with a modern take and a more authentic choice for her actual character traits, the slave girl. The wedding dress worn by the evil queen is evidence of Atwood's experimentation with both innovation and emerging technologies by placing a frame which is usually a hidden internal feature into a dramatic visual element on the top of the dress.

Edward Scissor Hands (1991) was created two decades ago yet the costume design is ahead of it's time, showing Colleen Atwood's ability to design ahead of her time, coming up with bold and modern designs that aren't mainstream.

Another example of her innovation was where she took the kimono, a traditional art form and changed it by making the waist more prominent with a more exposed neckline, creating a more film appropriate costume.
